Will AC Milan’s new signings bring them back to the top?

AC Milan has gone on a spending spree during this summer transfer window, splashing out more than €200 million to sign 11 players, making them one of Europe’s biggest spenders. Their most notable acquisition is Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus. The 30-year old has been one of the most solid defenders in Italy as the Bianconeri have stamped their authority in the Serie A for the past six seasons.

How Milan lured him for €40 million remains a mystery but the bottom line is that the Rossoneri need to be back on the football map after years of decline.

Asides Bonucci, the seven-time European champions have recruited Mateo Musacchio, Ricardo Rodriguez, Andre Silva, Hakan Calhanoglu, Franck Kessie, Fabio Borini, Andre Conti and Lucas Biglia. These names might not be world class but they are proven quality with vast experience at club and international level.

The football world seems happy with the purchases of Vincenzo Montella as they would be thrilled to see what his new boys can offer for the upcoming campaign. There’s however a tendency too many signings will disorganise the team.

This happened to Queens Park Rangers that splashed a club record £44 million on acquiring 15 players like Julio Cesar, Park Ji-Sung, Jose Bosingwa, Esteban Granero, Christopher Samba, Loïc Rémy ahead of the 2012/2013 Premier League season and still finished rock bottom, relegating to the Championship.

Others have gotten it right though.

In the summer of 2009, then Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho acquired seven new players in Diego Milito, Goran Pandev, Samuel Eto’o, Wesley Sneijder, Thiago Motta and the result was a treble victory of the Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League.

Milan’s acquisitions can be likened to Arsenal who have been deemed to underachieve for so many years despite having superb players headed by one of the most experienced coaches in the world in Arsene Wenger. Montella doesn’t have the same pedigree as the Frenchman but he has to come through and deliver. He will also be dealing with players who might be coming with some sort of entitlements at the back of their minds as to how many minutes they should be getting on the pitch.

It might not all doom for Milan at the end of the day as any improvement from their sixth place finish of last season would be seen as progress, and hopefully qualify for the Champions League – where they haven’t participated since 2014.

This would give Montella and his men more believe in their cause, attract better players and finally compete against Europe’s giants.
